I got a blog, then there's Twitter, then there is Myspace, and can't forget about Facebook, cell phone text messages...what happened to the simple phone or taking the time to write a letter on that fancy stationary and going to the mailbox? I guess those days are longer, especially since the USPS keeps increasing the price of stamps by 2 cents. I love all this technology that we have these days but it can be overwhelming at times.

At work, I was told that I am going to be trained for additional responsibilty with my department. These days, the more you can learn, and show upper management that you are a valuable asset to them, you can stay off the chopping block. I just hope that this new stuff will translate into a few more dollars in my wallet. Maybe more than the $13/pay period that we can expect from this new stimulus package. $13???

I'm Back!!

I hope you all are still out there! How is everyone doing? Well, I hope everyone had a good week and has something planned for the weekend. I have been off work for the last two days, so I took this time to do my early vote. Have you voted? Well, thank god for the 80GB Ipod, because it took close to 3 hours to cast my vote. They said that next week should be a little easier since there will be many more polls open, but I wanted to get it out the way. I ask you again...have you voted yet?

It was so pleasant to see us out there, early and trying to make a difference. Young, and old I just think folk are ready for change in this world, and why not with Barack? Have you voted?? Please get out there and vote, so we can go ahead and take off November 5th and celebrate. I kid, I kid, but please get out there and vote!

What's going on with me? I am slowing getting back to my music--you know exploring all my music sites, allmusic.com, soulwalking.com, billboard.com, Soul Session of BETJ, and all the good XM channels to find good music. I have some new stuff for you to google:

Eric Benet's new album
Kindred and The Family Soul new album
Maysa
John Legend's Evolver Album
Musiq's new track "Radio"
Anthony Hamiliton's "Cool"
D'Angelo's new version of his Space Jam soundtrack "I Found My Smile Again"
Raphael Saadiq new album

Let me know if I missed anything, but let me go and tweak out my fantasy football team. This is my second try of going outside my department for more duckets. Don't get me wrong, I love my current job/description, but with a growing boy, and some financial goals I would like to attain, the extra duckets would come in handy.

The interview was last week, and when I went in there, the game was changed up a little. Unbeknownst to me, I could be possibly be considered for two separate positions. So, just pray for a brotha, I will keep you updated on that.

-I had to get a tooth pulled...not fun at all!! I should of just went ahead and got knocked out(sedated) for the procedure, but nooo, I tried to man up and take the local numbing medicine. No....for those of you reading this..get knocked out lol!! But, I must say that the hydrocodone (sp?) pills has really been my friend.

-My wallet has gotten to chance to breathe, how about yours? Have you noticed a drop in the gas prices? Do you think it will fall below the $2 mark? Many economic analysts are saying that the decrease in gas prices, can represent our 2ND economic stimulus package, what do you think?

-Fantasy Football update--I was tied for first in my division, but this week did not fare well for me. I am currently up by 10 points, however my opponent still has Chris Johnson, and Dallas Clark yet to play, so my 3 game winning streak may come to an end on Monday night! Big Ben really let me down this week giving me just 1 point. But he is a stud, and they are playing the Redskins, so hopefully he can bounce back. On the other hand, I had Kyle Orton on the bench, chilling next week as they take on the Detroit Lions. Decisions, decisions!! LOL.

-Lastly, whomever you like in this election, please get out there and vote please! I recently got my updated voter registration card, so I will be partaking in the early voting proceedings. I can't believe that election time is almost here, I guess it's time to turn to every channel and see that big map, with blue and red indicators on every state, and their predictions. But me, let me go ahead and Barack the vote!!

Well, that's enough for me, I hope you all have a good week and I will talk with you all soon!!

Take It Easy!!

Fantasy Football Update

I got creamed last week due to the lackluster play of Big Ben!! That man got me -9 points, do you hear me? I was so pissed off about that. Saying that, Ben is staying on the bench and I am going to step out there and use JT O'Sullivan from the 49'ers, as they are playing the Saints. I have Reggie Bush as well, but I think this may be turn out to be a scoring affair because both defenses aren't the stronger, so please wish me luck. I am playing the undefeated team and I want to knock him out. I know I am slow reporting this but Barack had a rally this past weekend, and even though I didn't get the chance to see him, me and the fam stood in line for about 3 hours for the experience. When we finally got to the front, he was midway into his speech. No hard feelings, I am just glad that I was there for the experience and that my little man experienced it as well. Speaking of Barack, I was thinking that I am definitely going to have to make that trip to Washington, D.C. to be a part of the inaugration, but this is living history for real. What do you think?

The debates are supposed to start on Friday, so I am really looking forward to see how they transpire even though John is requesting that they hold off for now until they get the bailout under control.

Expectations

I am slowly learning that with some people it is not wise to have any type of expectations. When you don't expect anything out of certain people, I find myself less stressed and not so worried. Stop worrying about things/people that you can't change. Just try to continue to do the right thing, and just remember that karma can be a rough thing.

Happy Hump Day To All!!

Take It Easy!

Tyler Perry/Bootlegg Movies/Fantasy Football Update

What's up Family?

I got the chance to see the Tyler Pery Movie, and I would like to read your viewpoints on the movie. I really enjoyed the movie immensely, even though I am not really used to seeing Sanaa Lathan act that right. She really garnered a negative reaction from the audience throughout the whole movie!! But I really enjoyed, Rockmond Dunbar and Kathy Bates' performance. I was pleasantly surprised with the movie, being that this was something off the cuff for Tyler Perry. Now, it's time to see "Madea Goes To Jail", and of course that new movie with Pacino/DeNiro. Has anyone seen that movie yet? I believe it's called "Righteous Kill".

I know I don't go to movies that often but I have an observation. In between the scenes of the movie, you would see a bright, bright, blue flash illuminate the whole theatre. At first, I was slow to recognize what was going on, but then it clicked lol. But seriously, could you be any more blantant than with a big blue light every 10 minutes. It was very annoying, but I can't knock anyone's hustle but I know Tyler Perry can't stand the bootleggers.

Fantasy update: I won again with 108 points. My top scorer this week was Calvin Johnson with 26 points. I am still a little bit concerned with Big Ben's sore shoulder, but he is a trooper so I think he should be fine. Furthermore, since Redskin's tight end Chris Cooley caught headlines with his blog, and his "free in the wind" picture, I did find his blog as well. I will drop him a comment and see if he gets back to me. His blog is on my list.

Well, have a good hump day and take it easy!!

How Much Was Your Gas?/Fantasy Football Update

As Hurricane Ike approaches Texas, and the folk in Charlotte started to worry like crazy, I saw the price of gas change within hours. What is a Shout Fest? It was a meeting of great music that included shout bands (tubas, trombones, trumpets, tambourines) and various choirs.

http://www.charlottecentercity.org/nav.cfm?cat=18&subcat=102&subsub=0&id=2038

Let me tell you, after hearing them, they wanted me to go and get my tuba and mouthpiece and start marching again!! I was just amazed about their improvastional skills. I didn't see a piece of music everywhere and the crowd from age 2-82 were spiritually moved by the music. At one point, I felt like I was right in the middle of a battle of the bands because 2 Shout bands were facing each other at the front of the church and each band were respectful but going at each other full force. One band would hold their last note at triple fortismo, with the lead trombone meandering around the last note as his slide almost falls off, while the other band were itching at the chops, to take that last note, change the key, and rock it on to a brand new song. They really bought gospel music life and force fed it right to your soul. If you ever get the chance to see a Shout band, I would strongly encourage you to go, as there are several bands across the country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shout_band

Take It Easy!!

Apple Must Have Heard My Request!

For all of my Ipod owners, along with the new line of Ipods that were introduced, there is also a new Itunes 8.0. The reason why I say that Steve Jobs must have heard my request is the fact there is an exciting new feature on the Itunes program called "Genius".

http://www.apple.com/itunes/features/#genius

I have tried a few times and I really like it. You go into your music library and select a song. Once you select a song, the Genius scans it, and compiles a list of recommend songs that are not in your library to add to your Ipod. Based on the selections that I have seen, it's right on the money! Furthermore, it can compile a playlist based on that song, with various songs that match the genre. I guess since the Apple brand has somewhat plateaued, they are looking to keep the current users enertained. I like it alot. My Redskins looked...terrible. It's early but the kicker only got me one point on my fantasy team, so you know I was hot about that lol. Then, to make this worse, my number 1 draft pick, Tom Brady is down for the year!!! Can you believe that mess? Everytime I draft a QB they go down; case in point: Chad Pennington and Kurt Warner in 2007 and now Tom Brady in 2008. So, please pray that Big Ben can carry me through the season. Nevertheless, the rest of my team performed wonderfully (ie Reggie Bush, and did you see Brandon Jacobs just make a poster out of the poor Redskins cornerback! As you can see, I am quite addicted to this Fantasy Football thing.

Well I have some things to look forward to. Next week on ABC Family, my show was picked up for a 3rd season, and it starts next week: Lincoln Heights:

http://abcfamily.go.com/abcfamily/path/section_Shows+Lincoln-Heights/page_Detail

Also, don't forget that this Friday, Tyler Perry's new movie is coming out and that looks good as well: "The Family That Preys"

I really enjoyed most of Tyler's productions, but I am really feeling this one due to the very diverse cast. Are you going to check it out?

Well, it looks like D'Angelo is making small strides back to the music scene. On blogs, and even on my some on Itunes podcasts that I like to listen to, there is a buzz with D's "Found My Smile Again". For all the neo-soul lovers, you will know that D already released this track off of the "Space Jam" soundtrack, but it seems like he has tried to update the track, with new harmonies, instrumentation, and just overall vibe. I liked what he did, but this is the gateway to more D music. I will keep my ears open for you so stay tuned!!

Thank you for all the comments, I really appreciate the love! But Brady on a bad foot is about 10 times better than most talent in the league. Money is on the line so I will have to keep you updated on my results.

Well, thats all for now. I want to hear Sarah Palin's speech and see what mess she talks out the side of her neck!

Take care and be blessed and don't forget to pray for a brotha!!

Work Is Killing Me!!

Work has been killing me but I will get back on track.....

Stay tuned!!

But I am getting ready for Fantasy Football.

This Songs Still Speaks To Me!

Maxwell - What are some of the songs that are the soundtrack of your life. It's just amazing to me how some songs, by the introduction, first 8 bars, or even when the lead singer opens their mouth to sing the first note, take you there. Take you to place in your life: good or bad, loving or hating someone, a particular event, or just a special moment in your life. I don't know how that works, I need to research that to tell you the truth. But whenever my "soundtrack" songs, the 4 W's come right to mind. "What, When, Where, and Why".

Music is a powerful thing but school administration are quick to look at the Arts when its time to trim the budget. When I saw this in my Yahoo mailbox, this puts the 'Skins defense back at the top my list. For those of you who are fantasy football freaks, you know that the defense you choose is as just as important as the QB. Truthfully, I picked the Skin's defense mid-season and I fared pretty well.

Last year was my first year coming into the fantasy football world. I didn't take it seriously at first; I didn't even participate in the league draft. But after getting spanked my first two games, and not having a reliable QB (can you say Chad Pennington and Joey Harrington?), I really got into it. I picked up Big Ben from Pittsburgh and the NFL network became my friend on Sundays starting at 1PM. So, I am really looking forward to this season and being prepared for the draft! If you are a sports fan, I would highly recommend trying to join a league.

Oh, I can't forget....Hail To The Redskins, and thank you to Daniel and not sparing the checkbook!

http://www.haruth.com/RedskinsHailtotheRedskins.html

Take It Easy

See Mom...I Didn't Forget!!

Im Going Up Yonder - Shirley Ceaser

I was thinking about my mother so I had to write a post about her. Those Sunday mornings when she has the kitchen crackling with fresh bacon, eggs, and her homemade pancakes.I am upstairs in my bed, "pretending" to be sleep so I can miss the bus to go to Sunday School. But that's not going to happen today. Mom gets out of the kitchen, goes to the bottom of the stairs and screams "Get up and get ready for Sunday School because I know you are not sleep!" But hey can't a fault a brotha' for trying.

Whether it was Shirley Casear, Rev. James Cleveland, Walter Hawkins, The Clark Sisters or Dottie Peoples, I will never forget my mother having the good old-school gospel show by WHUR 96.3, hosted by Patrick Ellis. I think it was her way to thank the Lord because she always didn't get the chance to the House of The Lord, but that show was on without fail. So, as I get older, and moving to the QC, I am still looking for a new home, I find myself now listening to these same songs on a daily basis. The technology I have, (Ipod, Itunes), allows me to explore new gospel music, but sometimes search for those songs that Mom had on Sunday mornings.

http://www.wowgospelonline.com/

Thank you Mom! It's Friday afternoon and you have already made plans to leave work extra early. You first go to Wal-Mart, to get that last party tray of buffalo wings, Sam's Choice cola and party favors for the young people. You slide over to the ABC to get some Corona, Heineken, Jack Daniels, and Smirnoff. You race home to do to quick clean up and move your expensive stuff to your room for the fear of breakage. At this point your cell phone is ringing off the hook of your people just trying to get verbal confirmation that the event is still poppin' off.

Hey, everything is set for you party, but there is one critical thing left to do: the music!!!! So, you go to the Moto and call up Uncle Junebug to bring the music equipment. We all know Junebug is outside our demographic but he knows his music. What is the first song he plays to get things right? "Before I Let Go" by Maze of course, and instantly, the blue paper cups are put to the side, cigarettes in the ashtray, and the rugrats are asked to go on in the backyard, and the party officially begins!

But artists that offer classic jams like Maze are quite rare these days, so in your mind, which of today's artists do you think will offer the classic hits that we will play at our parties 10-15 years down the road?

Let me give you some examples and let me know how you feel about these:
Anything by Guy, a la "I Like" "Teddy's Jam"
Rob Base "It Takes Two"
Slick Rick/Doug E. Fresh "The Show"
Boston Area Artists New Editon "Candy" "NE Heartbreak", "If It Isn't Love"
The Classic Hip Hop Artists of Late 80's-Early 1990's a la Heavy D, Salt N Pepa, Special Ed, EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane,Biz Markie, Tribe Called Quest, etc.

I just don't see any too many party jams of today's music making to your living room in the next couple of years.

But to celebrate the season, I did find one song that seems to never go out of style.

Summertime, - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

Take It Easy

Living In The Information Age...Sometimes I Think It Can Be Too Much To Deal With

Let me explain, let me explain! Sometimes information is too accessible and we all know that some information is not meant to spread across bandwith, you know what I am sayin'?

On some levels, I think the internet has been wonderful. Any possible thing that you could possibly need, desire, inquire, learn about, read, listen to, or watch can be found with just a few clicks. Any news that occurs in the world, can be found instantly on the internet. But on the same token, do you think it makes corporations, entertainers, officials, members of government wide open for anything? Anyone can just go online, "google", and find these people contact information in minutes. In this microwave society, fast and right now, sometimes I think we need to sit back and think about how far the internet has come. And the funny part, this thing called internet is always changing. Now, that it is here, could you imagine your life without it?

http://www.isoc.org/internet/history/

Having said that, do you remember still how to sit at your desk with old fashioned stationery and write a letter and use the United State Postal Service to communicate with someone? How about actually going to a library and using the card catalog and the Dewey Decimal System to conduct some research? And finally, my 30+ readers are going to get me for this one, but how about asking the librarian for some microfiche to read old articles for research purposes? LOL. These ideas are quite extinct now, but goes to show you how far technology has come.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microfiche
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dewey_Decimal_classes

So can you deal the information age?

Gordon Gartrell Radio

I have another podcast for you to check out. But after the phenomenal release by Mr. Al Green, I am starting to get my musical taste back again.

http://www.algreenmusic.com/

Now, the little birds are telling me that I have another album to look forward to: Raphael Saadiq. I don't know what it is about the brother, but I think its because that I have grown up listening to Tony, Toni, Tone, his intricate bass lines that I love to follow, and his numerous songwriting assists he has done over the years, I just can't wait. According to reports, Saadiq has taken it back to the old school and is really trying to extract that vintage Motown soul sound. The late 60's-70's is my favorite decade about all things soul music. So, I am really looking forward to this new release.

http://www.raphaelsaadiq.com/

Riding his coattails, is Mr. Michael "D'Angelo" Archer. Virgin(correct me if I am wrong) has just released a greatest hits album (so far) and we can expect to his new album early 2009. So, will I be able to go to Best Buy now and don't leave empty handed? I guess time will tell! Stay tuned and go pick up that Al Green album and get to lovin' and thats an order!!

Take It Easy!!

If You Could Change Anything About College Life..Would You?

I don't think so. Life is pretty good right now minus some incidental drama but I don't think I wouldn't change too much. I think I made the right decision by attending the real HU, but knowing what I know now, I think I would have pursued another major so that music would have played a more prominent role in my life. I think I would went to either mass media or music technology if I could do it over again. But the friendships, experiences, and life lessons that I learned I am glad that I had the opportunity.

The most important thing about college for me was the foundation for me to grow up as a man. Beyond what was learned in the classroom, time management, discipline, and responsibility were also critical factors that were learned. I think another key element that I learned through college was effective problem solving. Not relying on my mother anymore, knowing what to do to solve a problem, whether it was how to delegate a group project, how to finish 3 projects that were all due on Friday, how to handle a wacked-out roommate, or how to survive and not go hungry for 2 weeks with only $20 dollars to your name. Effective problem solving back then, and those life lessons continue to pop in my daily life today.

So if you could change about college would you???

http://school.familyeducation.com/college/independence/37681.html

PS I am trying to maintain this blog, so please stick with me. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to."

1. Chuck Brown "Woody Woodpecker"--Some days I miss home, so it's good to listen to the Godfather and the rhythm instantly takes me back home.

2. "Wear It Out"--Gerald Levert--This is from the "Stroke of Genius" album. The title says it all, so there is no explanation needed.

3. "Da' Butt"--EU----Got to love this song!! For your young people, this song came off of The School Daze soundtrack.

4. "Stepped on My J'z" (Nelly/JD)--....trying to avoid the rotten tomatoes thrown my way. I know I know, before you say anything....I like the song, it's quite catchy, and I know MJ cut a nice check to Nelly for this one!!

5. "Round and Round"(LSG) This album was slept on! There are some serious tracks on this album and I am glad R Kelly didnt make the cut because I don't the group would not have the same chemistry.

6. "Soon and Very Soon" (Andre Crouch)--I have a gospel playlist on the Ipod and I try to get some gospel in before work and this songs seems to get in on many mornings.

7. "Brooklyn" (The Fuzz Band)---This is a jazzed up tune by my peeps from HU. Hilary has conceded from the race and Barack Obama will take the Democratic nomination. I am pulling for Barack but man to man, whether it is Barack or McCain, it is going to be a tough, uphill battle for the future president. The only thing you can do is hope that is your friendship is strong enough to maintain through the rough patches, otherwise it may best to let go of the past and just remember the good times. So, its good that there is some nostalgic shows to watch, one of those shows being Soul Train. I grew up on Soul Train, so its so cool to see these episodes again and just sit back reminisce. From Don Cornlieus' smooth baritone voice, the Asian lady with the long hair, the guy with the never ending collection of masks, the tall light skin brother who had all the Michael Jackson dance moves to a T. Ahh, the memories!

Beyond the fashion statements, and the horrible attempts of lip-syncing, one of my favorite parts of the show has to be the Soul Train line. What is your favorite memory from Soul Train?

With the repeats being broadcast, I can go back and complete my music collection with the help of Itunes. For example, I found "Satin Soul" by Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. So, when you get the chance, go back in time and watch a Soul Train show...it will be a stone gas!! I respect Congress' attempts to revive the economy with these economic stimilus checks but most consumers will strive to be savvy and probably try to save the money. We don't know how long we are going to be in this funk, but I have heard that Wal-Mart stores will be cashing checks for cusotmers at no charge, making it easier for consumers to spend, spend, spend! What are you going to do with your check?

If this isn't recession, what would you like to call it. Increased crime, along with the morale of the country is really at the nadir. The way that I know that is that my son is getting used to getting a haircut without crying anymore. Yes, the barber and I have to calm him down with a lollipop, but he is more relaxed when he gets in the barber chair. He is laid back and even putting his killer smile on the lady across the way who is braiding hair. It is quite amazing how quickly he has grown: following most of my directions, talking, telling me what he wants, and developing his own personality. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for him. Now that he is about to hit the terrible 2's, I am going to have to hone in that energy with either some sports, or music. I will keep you updated on that lol...

Thanks to a dear friend, I now have the opportunity to incorporate some music in my entries. He broke down the difference between the regular and superdelegates, which running mates Barack might go with if he gets on the ticket, and various skeletons each candidates has. One thing I caught from the conversation is that we should look beyond the fact that we may have our first Black president, but to happy that we are here to possibly witness history and see a "first"...period. Personally, I have never been so interested in a presidential race before; I think because this election has so many various ramifications on us Americans, it could make us or break us...stay tuned...

http://www.barackobama.com/

I hope everyone had a good Easter weekend. I did, my mother came down to hang with me. Well, not to see me but to spoil her grandson. I think my bond my mother and me has grown for the better since I have moved to the Queen City, and she has given some great advice on how to handle various situations. And for that, I thank her and I love her!! What a beautiful, sunny Easter in the Tarheel state, along with some surprising upsets for March Madness. Money...Success...Family....Friends....Someone famous or someone across the street...Significant other....Higher Being? Whomever it may be, I think it's important to find your source of inspiration, harness and cherish it, and use it as a tool to reach any goal that you are trying to achieve. I say of all this to say, that I have a very special source of inspiration that got me to start this blog, and moreover maintaining it! This inspiration is a great writer, thinker, educated and a great friend. I have known her for a long time and I really appreciate everything that she has done for me and I look forward to seeking her guidance/advice in the future. Thank You!!

The more things change the more they stay the same. What a crazy oxymoron but a true one. I don't know about you but for me personally, your word is everything. If you can't stand behind your word, hmmm things will always remain questionable with me. What do you do when folk promise you something, but don't follow through? Do you supposed to keep giving them chances to burn/punk you, punish them, or let them go until they can learn to stand by their word. Well, for me I think I am not going to hold it against this person, but this person will definitely OWE me in the future (heh, heh, heh :).

Take it easy!

Coming up: Freeloaders..Is there a Raid spray out there that I can use to make them go away??

Signs...Single Life And More!!

First, I need to give another shout out the nicest voice on internet radio, Ms. Steph Renee of Soul Sanctuary Radio. Under that will be your raggedy boxes with a yes or no above them; do you remember those days? But when you like someone, and give them signs but they never catch on to them, who is at fault? The person who was giving signs or the person who receiving the signs who were too slow to catch on. Little birdies are telling me that sometimes you need to be forthright and tell the other party your feelings, but sometimes going with your heart has dangerous complications. But how many signs do you need to get the point? Let me divulge you with you a few examples: wanting to spend all of your time after school, knowing you had a bunch of homework but you dropped your book bag and went to knocking on the door, taking interest in what she likes to do, sticking up for her when some guys were giving her some trouble, love taps, punches, etc. Would you had caught the signs? (Putting my finger on my temple and I am saying "hmmmm") But I must say as I got older, I have learned the best way and only way, is to be forthright, go for what you want. Life is much too short for signs, because if the other party doesn't have their mitt on to catch it, both of you have missed out on a possible golden opportunity.

Let me break it down to you: Working hard on the job, getting home, putting on your leisure gear, and making it in time for happy hour, and for you to kick some game to that fine bartender, who has no interest in you, unless you are filling up her tip jar. Looking forward to Friday so you could hit up Republic Gardens, or Dream, case the whole club, get a little tipsy, find you a nice little honey dip, you dance all night long, and if things flow right, you will be following her home, or you two could possibly meet at IHOP for some nightcap. The blackbook: having enough entries to keep you busy, your phone constantly ringing, and your voicemail box full. Gentleman's club, whether its the Mirage, Roxy or McDoogals (Hey Ms Sassy and Neveah!), no better to place to spend your disposable income1 I say all of this to say, I don't mind growing up, opening a new chapter in my life, and acquiring responsibility, but hey, sometimes I do miss the single life! I just have a question, are gas prices affecting you the way they are affecting me? Do you have to reconfigure your budget these days just to make sure you have enough to fill your tank? Do you see yourself looking at your gas gauge more these days and find yourself pointing at it, cursing at it, and saying to yourself" I just filled up this damn thing!!" I don't know about you but it seems to me that once your gas tank hits the half way point, the gas burns twice as fast lol!!! As the price of barrels of oil are at record prices, there is no relief in sight. Analysts are thinking that $4/gallon for gasoline is very much feasible. They wonder why consumer confidence/spending is down.....hmmm how about the fact we are trying to save our damn gas? When I first got my car it was $11 to fill my tank, today try like $32. It is out of control. Hopefully, within the next couple of years, we can find an alternate fuel source so we will not be solely reliant on oil. What do you think?

How do you know when you got great friends? How about the fact when you can have a friend that may have moved away, or just lost contact with but by happenstance, you guys get reconnected, and you pick right back up like nothing had changed. That's a good sign that you have a good, true friend on your hands and cherish that. Good friendship is hard to find, because you can't make it out in this crazy world alone, so I challenge you to call some of your best friends, and tell them "Thank You For Being A Friend!"

Coming Up: The Single Life......Signs

The Gym....Working on Patience!

Hey, I am trying to do right by going to the gym. I pack my gym clothes in my bag when I go to work, so I have no excuse about having to go home and changing. All I want to do is go in do my thing and roll out. But, is not that simple these days. There are far too many temptations I see...

No, no I am not talking about those temptations...get your head out of the gutter please. I am not talking about those young, supple women who know what they are doing by walking in there with those tight spandex pants and sport bras and they get on the elliptical machines in the very very front so us guys can get a free show. They know what they are doing :)....oh, and why do they always have to bend over in front of me to get the cleaning bottle to wash the machine when they are done? Why, why?

But I digress, what I am speaking of is that big, oval table that sits in front of the welcome desk. Pizza Hut....Papa Johns....Subway...Chinese...Italian....Jersey Mikes....and ANY other food coupon you could desire!! So, what's the point? Let's go ahead and work for out for a 1 1/2 and then once we cool down, we are going to shut down McDonalds, is that how it works? That's a great workout program; please sign me up!! You would think that there would be some healthier alternatives on display there (ummm GNC?), but it's the total opposite which is mind boggling to me. I just wanted to know if it is the same at your gym?

My friend told me to have patience. Patience is something that I am working on everyday. Being an only child, and now having a son, it's a work in progress. But I hope my friends remember this patience conversation the next time my friend requests something to be done expeditiously.:) Patience is truly something I desire.

Your First Reaction....Right??

Good Morning! I have a question for you out there: isn't it true that your first, initial reaction most times than none, the person's most honest reaction? Allow me to give you an example please: what reaction would you ingest if you told a very, very close friend some quite newsworthy information and what you got was.......utter silence? However, as the news sinked in to that person, maybe 10-15 minutes later the secondary reaction quite complimentary, and wordy but like as I stated it was 15 minutes later. Which reaction would you deem to have more prudence? For me personally, the first reaction is the real reaction.

Well, this person feels that I don't understand that he/she was "shocked" during that initial reaction period and I need to take that into consideration. I can understand/respect that but ummmmm ummmmm no I am STILL going with that first reaction lol! This friend is tight with me and knows how I roll, so "shocked" is an invalid reaction....

Anyways, who is right in this debate me or my friend? (http://www.tv.com/small-wonder/show/1711/summary.html) Well, the main character of the show, Vicki, comes to mind as I write this blog entry. For those who remember, she was a robot, and talked like one, with short, choppy, sentences. Vicki is the personification of what I am getting from some of my friends these days with generic communications and I must speak on it....lol

Ladies and Gentleman, today we are spoiled with communication methods. Just a few years ago, you had 3 choices, risking being cursed out by your parents for hogging up the house phone, paying 25 cents to use the pay phone(yes, I said payphones), or doing it the old-fashioned way with a stamp and letter. Today, the options are endless: cell phone, cell phone text message, Blackberry, email, lotus notes, and the options go on and on. I say all of this to say, take things back to the old school and take the time to write something of substance.(throwing a friendly hint to a dear friend...:)

Before you curse me out, I understand the KISS method of keeping things short, simple and to the point. But this rule does not apply to your friends (especially ones you have known all of your life :)) I don't know about you, but I want to know what's going on with you....if I write you an email, I want a little more than, "imitating Vicki from Small Wonder", "Hello, how...are...you...doing? I...am...doing...fine...how....has...your...day...been?" No, no, nooooooo!! Give your brother some love and substance! That's all I ask for.

This is dedicated to a dear friend, just trying to give her a hard time. But on a serious note, we are all busy folk, but if someone takes the time reach out, please...please...no generic communication. Ok? Thank you :)

Coming up: William "Flavor Flav" Drayton....How Is He Doing It????

Charlotte Was Taken Over By The CIAA!

This Weekend brought the culmination of the CIAA tournament festivities. I could be wrong but I believe Charlotte will be hosting the tournament until 2012 I believe. Well, being the frugal person that I am, I only attended the free stuff, except I scored some tickets to the final basketball game as well.

Well, the CIAA Fan Experience was this past Saturday at the Charlotte Convention Center, which was free to the public. Some of the big sponsors included: Ford Motor Company, Luster Hair Care, Geico, Dirty South Customs, McDonald's, US Navy, Alltel Communications, and Best Buy. For my car buffs, I am going to need for you to go to Ford's website and check out the new Ford 650. They had it on display there, and that piece of metal was a beast for real. (http://www.f650pickups.com/) I also saw my next vehicle, the Ford Expedition, in black, which had me salivating. But has economists are predicting gas prices to finally reach $4 by summer, I may have to rethink that decision. Best Buy had their setup quite nicely with flat-screen plasma and LCD TVs all over the place, and with Wii stations as well.

But, with the overall demographics for the event being very young, I was quite shocked that many of the CIAA schools were absent from the event. This could have been an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their schools to the young folk who may have never heard of say Virginia Union, or Fayetteville State University. Missed opportunity there. (http://www.ciaatournament.org/home). However, there were vendors which gave the parents of these young folk, the opportunity to check their blood pressure, as well as other health screening information that was nice.

Now, to the entertainment portion. I must say that I was presently surprised by some of the performances. When we got there, Lyfe Jennings was finishing up his set, but then Rick Ross came up on the stage. Blah, blah, wonk, wonk....I really wasn't impressed. However, I do like one of his songs which takes the sample from my movie's soundtrack, "Scarface". I think the name of the song from the movie is "Take It To The Limit". But his performance is quite lacking and gave me further reason to give up on hip-hop. (http://www.defjam.com/site/artist_home.php?artist_id=607)

Chrisete Michelle was also there but she was a little uninspired up there. Like, these kids did not pay to see me, so let me give them like 25%. One thing that caught me off guard is that I think Lyfe came strong with a live band whereas Chrisette was using tracks. I don't know I wasn't feeling that at all. I think one of the best performances of the afternoon had to go to Raheem Devaughn. Washington' D.C.'s own did not have a live band, but he did rock the crowd and had the ladies swooning, all the time, he had an onstage artist, painting Raheem. If you haven't got the chance to see him live,I will strongly suggest you do. He will give you hope for R & B music. (http://www.theloveexperience.com/index_main.html)

Tiffany Evans had a short set of I believe 2 songs, but she was setting up the crowd for Mr. Chad "Bow Wow" Moss. I hate to admit this but Bow Wow had the performance of the afternoon. He shut the place down, had those teeny-bopper girls feening, screaming, standing on trash cans, on the shoulders of tired brothers who were ready to go home. I never knew how many hits Bow Wow, but he was doing his thing with flavor and passion, and as a music lover, you would have to give him his props.

I ended the evening with the final CIAA tournament basketball game at Bobcats arena. Older alumni were there, dressed to the nines, with the Bros wearing their frat pins on their suit lapel, and the lovely ladies looked so elegant. Folk with old money was everywhere. The arena cameras flashed on Free and Rosci from BET, as well as Bow Wow who were on the front row. The final game was between Fayetteville State and the hometown Johnson C. Smith. Being a former band head, I was checking out the pep bands, but I think the Golden Bulls band took this one. Their one tuba player was filling up the area quite nicely. I am going to have find him on campus and show him some love from one tuba player to another.

Overall, I had a good time....take it easy

Bass Clef

Other Options You Have Beyond The Radio/I Feel Cheated!

If you are sick of mainstream radio as I am, I just wanted to make you aware that you do have options and I just wanted to present some radio alternatives your way:

Yahoo Music

One of my favorite sources of music. You can create your own radio station based on your ratings. I have my radio station link below for you to check out:

http://music.yahoo.com/lc/?rt=0&rp1=0&rp2=1219452501

Pandora Music

I love this site because it's in the same format as other Internet radio stations but this site is a little bit more detailed in its selection process for you. The site breaks down songs by genre, composition of the song, vocal styling, etc. The site shows much love to indie artists. Please check it out:

http://www.pandora.com/

Last FM

I just started using this radio station and it seems like its a little needy in terms of setup but makes good choices based on your ratings. This one also scans your Itunes or Windwow's play lists and makes choices for you based on the number of times those songs are played. Check it out here:

http://www.last.fm/listen

I love soul/rb music. I feel like I have a strong connection with this genre and I have a friend who has an excellent radio program/podcast. (Plus her radio voice is hmmmm wonderful :)) I had to give her shout out. She always goes deep in her archives and provides you with the best of the best in soul/rb music. Check her out here:

http://www.soul-sanctuary.net/

I'm always looking for new music, so if you have any other suggestions, please pass them my way.

Why do I Feel Cheated?

All of those hours spending on my baseball card collections, organizing them by team, position, etc...Spending 3 and 4 hours in front of my tiny black and white TV with the UHF VHF dials watching 9 innings of baseball...bartering or just begging for the right baseball card with all of my friends in order to complete my collection....for what? Its been all a lie.....LIES I tell you. But to tell you the truth, Barry Bonds was quite obvious. I remember him playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates and he was skinny as a rail and then a few years later, BAM, he turned into the Negro Hulk! But Barry, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Lenny Dykstra, and Roger Clemens, they all let me down.

I gave up on baseball after they striked for the second time back in the 80's. I kept saying, these are some spoiled, selfish players, so I quit watching the game. But, I had the itch again, I wanted to get back into the stats, figuring who would win the Cy Young award, etc...but thanks to the Mitchell Report.....I have lost interest again. I guess now it will be a matter of time that the NBA and the NFL will be under a nasty cloud of steroid talk. I guess time will tell....

Why Did You Name Your Blog That???

Some new albums coming out today that I am actually interested in either buying or downloading:

Janet Jackson: http://www.janetjackson.com/. The name of the album is "Discipline". Hopefully, JD will pour some of that production luck on this album the same way he did for Mariah Carey.

Erkyah Badu: http://www.erykahbadu.com/ I love this woman! She has never let me down yet. From the sheer name and her past work, I will download this album from Itunes.

Why is the name of my blog, "Let Your Life Do The Singing"? This came from a verse from my Alma mater, Hampton University, and the school song:

“Oh, Hampton, we never can make thee a song, except as our lives do the singing. In service that will thy great spirit prolong, and send it through centuries ringing!"

Everyday, I try to live by this mantra. We live in such a "microwave" society, everything has to be done, given to us, etc. right now and fast, that sometimes we forget that anything worth having takes hard work, and dedication. Never stop learning, and taking the time to help someone else is something that I am always striving to do. You can't make it alone, you just can't. The quicker you realize that, the better off you will be. So, if you are doing the right thing, and trying to help someone else, maybe you can shut up and let you life do the singing.

No More Trips To Best Buy For New Music Tuesday...

Good afternoon.......I love music...I really do but music is terrible these days. Its gotten so bad, that I rather listen to ESPN analyst, Stephen A. Smith podcast every morning, than listen to Sean Kingston, Fergie, or Beyonce for the umpteenth time (even though I always love that Until The End of Time Remix with JT).

I am grateful for my Ipod; it allows me to go back to when music was good: Marvin Gaye, Stevie, or anything from the 70's Motown era, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti Labelle, Chaka with Rufus, or MJ when he had some skin tone. Fast forward a little bit and I love to reminisce on those 80-90's artists that ruled the airwaves: Guy, Teddy Riley and the New Jack movement, Keith Sweat, R. Kelly (pre sex tape), Whitney Houston (pre-crack), Prince, Boyz II Men, when Babyface's songwriting skills ruled the radio, Mint Condition, and all of those damn Neo Artists who are missing in action: D, Erkyah Badu (album next week?), Jaguar Wright, Bilal, Musiq. I can go on but I won't....I will just wait for a few hours, plug in my Itrip FM transmitter, and just kick back to when times were good, while my radio, and 6 disc changer gets no more love from me....

Greetings and Salutations

Greetings to the Blog World!!

First of all I need to thank my good friend "Soulstress" for giving me the push to do this but I am happy to finally be a part of the blogging community!
